Shirodhara: A stream of relaxation

The Third Eye Treatment or Shirodhara brings relaxation and reguvenation to the triad- body, mind and soul- forming a human being. Shirodhara can be deciphered into two, shiras meaning head and dhara meaning flow. The shiras is anointed with different liquids such as herbal oils, medicated milk, buttermilk, coconut water or plain water in a special manner.

Shirodhara along with other ayurvedic remedies is practiced in Ayurvedic centres, health spas and resorts. The treatment is done under strict prescription of an ayurvedic healer. The initial step is a soothing body scrub which eliminates all the dirt and helps body pores to breathe. The patient is then made to lie down on the message table which has been warmed.

Aromatic and soothing oils are applied to the limbs and the nose. The head is kept at a slightly lower position than the body with a brass pot containing the liquid placed directly over the forehead. The steady stream of liquid from the hole in the pot falls gently on the patient's head which provides relaxation and essence of purification.

The stream of liquid is poured after plugging the patient's ears with cotton. However the oil which travels from the body is collected in another vessel kept underneath and is used for massage.The body is wiped clean and wraped with moist towels to avoid lose of warmth from the body after the session. The ambience is set with neutral music, diffused natural light, candles, flowers, and other decorations which are intended to promote relaxation.
